“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” – 1John 3:16
LIGHT FOR NOW: The divine nature is revealed most clearly in sacrificial love. God’s life within us does not merely seek to be served; it delights to serve others.
One of the clearest expressions of the divine nature is sacrificial love. Love that costs nothing reveals little; but love that willingly gives itself reflects the very heart of God. John writes: “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us”. The cross is the greatest revelation of God’s nature. When we look at Calvary, we do not merely see the suffering of Christ; we see the character of God. The Father did not merely speak about love; He demonstrated it.
Paul echoes this truth when he says: “God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”. This is divine love; it does not wait until people become deserving. It reaches them while they are still undeserving. This is the kind of love the believer has received through the new birth. John then makes a remarkable application: “And we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren”. Notice that he moves from doctrine to practice; from revelation to responsibility. From what Christ has done for us to how we should live toward others.
The expression “lay down our lives” does not always mean dying physically. It speaks of a life of selfless sacrifice. It means choosing forgiveness over revenge; choosing service over selfishness; choosing generosity over greed; choosing unity over division. It is the daily decision to place the good of others before personal convenience. This is exactly how Christ lived. Paul describes Him as One who “pleased not himself”. Though He was rich, He became poor for our sake. Though He was Lord, He took the form of a servant. Though He was sinless, He bore our sins. Such love cannot be produced by mere human effort; it is the fruit of the divine nature.
The natural man asks, “What can I gain?” The new creation asks, “How can I serve?” The natural man seeks recognition. The divine nature seeks opportunities to bless. This is why genuine Christianity is never self-centred. The believer who partakes of God’s nature becomes increasingly concerned about the spiritual and practical welfare of others. He rejoices when others rejoice. He bears the burdens of the weak. He comforts the brokenhearted. He gives because he has first received from God.
The more we understand how deeply God has loved us, the more freely we love those around us. This is why John repeatedly connects love for God with love for fellow believers. The two cannot be separated. To claim intimacy with God while refusing to love His children is to contradict the very nature we profess to possess. The divine nature always moves outward; it blesses, it heals, it restores, it forgives, and it serves. As partakers of God’s nature, we become channels through which His love reaches the world. Today, ask yourself this question: Who can experience God’s love through me? Your answer to that question may become someone’s evidence that Christ truly lives. Hallelujah!
INSTRUCTION: Look intentionally for someone you can serve today. Whether through encouragement, generosity, forgiveness, or practical help, let God’s love find expression through your life.
CONFESSION: Father, thank You for demonstrating Your immeasurable love through Jesus Christ. Fill my heart with that same love, and help me to live selflessly. Make me a channel through which Your compassion, kindness, and grace reach others every day, in Jesus’ name, Amen. Glory!
