“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said let there be light and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light day and the darkness he called night. And the evening and the morning were the first day” Genesis 1:1-5
LIGHT FOR NOW: Jesus Christ is the light in God’s utterance in the beginning.
In our previous studies, it was clearly seen that the light in Genesis 1:3 was not literal but a figurative expression. What could this light be if we must understand the previous verses? Recall, it’s been established that the epistles are the explanations of the scriptures. Now, let’s view Paul’s words in the epistles which will give us a lead to unfolding Moses’ communication in our key text, in his second epistle to the Corinthian church, he made this clear, it reads “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost. In whom the God of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, least the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God should shine unto them… For God who commanded the light to shine out of the darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2Corinthians 4:3-4 & 6). Now, let’s have an understanding of the verses above one after the other to fully grasp Paul’s words. Observe in verse 3, he says that the gospel can only be hid to them that are lost. Now, in verse 4, he explains the “them that are lost” (in verse 3) as those who the God of this world has blinded their minds. Before we proceed, let’s clarify and issue on Satan being the god of this world. You know many assume that when Satan is being referred to as the god of this world; it means Satan is the owner of the world; that is, the earth, the planet or the universe. Obviously, that assumption is out of place because it will take the creator of the world, the earth and the universe to be the owner of the world, earth or universe. Genesis already opens up with the concept of God being the creator (Genesis 1:1; even though the term heaven and earth in verse 1 and the word earth in verse 2 were figurative expressions communicating a spiritual truth that will be explained in subsequent days). However, if you still read in context of Genesis 1, you will see when the heaven (literal atmospheric heaven) and the earth (the dry land and the gathering together of waters which was called seas) were created (Genesis 1:7-10) and this was still done by God. Furthermore, they are overwhelming scriptures to show the fact that God is the creator of the world, the heaven, the earth, the universe at large and a few of these scriptures include the following below which reads; “The earth is the Lord’s and his fullness thereof; the world and they that dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1). “For the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof…” (1Corinthians 10:26). “For by him were all things created that are in heaven, and that are in the earth…” (Colossians 1:16). Thus, the universe, the world or planet earth is the intellectual work of God. Satan doesn’t own or control the earth because God is the creator and He has never run out of control of the earth He created. So, the question now is, what does the statement “the god of this world” being referred to Satan means? Let’s find that out in our proceeding studies as we will further go on to unveil what the light in Genesis 1:3 is. Hallelujah!!!
