“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said let there be light and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light day and the darkness he called night. And the evening and the morning were the first day” Genesis 1:1-5
LIGHT FOR NOW: The light in the beginning is the person of Christ.
In our previous studies, we established that the light in Genesis 1:3 was a figurative communication. However, we began to examine Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 and 6 where we will have clarity of Moses’ words. Furthermore, we observed verse 3 of Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 4 and we were about putting clarity on the fact of Satan being the god of this world. Let’s read Paul’s words again as we will proceed with the explanations, “But if our gospel be hid; it is hid unto them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blindeth the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2Corinthians 4:3-4, 6). Recall we saw in previous study that the assumption that Satan is the god of the planet, the earth, the world is out of place because he is not the creator. So, when the term “the god of this world” is used in reference to Satan, what does it mean? The misunderstanding that comes from the use of the word “world”. There exist two words for the word “world” in the Greek; they are the words “kosmos” which means inhabitant or earth space and the word “aion” which means activities or time space; the word “aion” speaks of this age/dispensation, that is activities, mode of conduct or behaviours/mannerism of men that contradicts God; the operations or thoughts of men that contradicts God’s word. Obviously, when Satan is being referred to as “the god of the world”, it is not in reference to the “kosmos” (the inhabitants or earth space); it is in reference to the “aions” (the activities of men that contradict God’s word). That is why the word “world” used in 2Corinthians 4:4 is the word “aion”. In other words, Satan is not the god of the earth, the universe, the world (the “kosmos”), he is the god of the “aions” because he is the one in charge of the activities of men or the thoughts of men that contradict God. That is, when Satan is being referred to as “the god of this world”. It is to infer the fact that he is the one in charge of activities, the mode of conduct, thoughts of the unsaved man. So, Satan being referred to as “the god of this world” means he is the one in charge of the minds of men who have not believed the gospel, and not that Satan owns the earth, No! That is, Paul further says “the god of this world hath blinded the minds…” In other words, the mind of the unsaved is the world of Satan; he stays in such a mind and carries out activities that contradict God. That clarified, in our subsequent studies, the light in Genesis will unfold and everything surrounding our key text will become clear. Hallelujah!!!
