“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” – 1 John 4:4
LIGHT FOR NOW: The believer’s confidence is not in himself, but in the greatness of the Christ who dwells within him.
One of the greatest revelations in the New Testament is the reality of Christ in the believer. Christianity is not merely following the teachings of Jesus from a distance; it is carrying His life within. John says: “Ye are of God…” This statement alone is powerful. The believer’s origin has changed. Though physically born into this world, spiritually he is now born of God. The phrase “of God” speaks of source, nature, and belonging. The believer now carries the life and nature of God within his spirit. Then John says: “…and have overcome them”.
Notice again the language of victory. Scripture continually speaks to believers from the standpoint of triumph, not defeat. The word “overcome” here is from the Greek word nikao, meaning to conquer, prevail, or gain victory. This victory is not based on human ability but on divine indwelling. The reason for this victory is revealed in the next statement: “Because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world”. The believer’s advantage is not external circumstances but internal presence. Who is the “He” in you? The Holy Spirit; the Spirit of Christ dwelling within the believer. This means Christianity is not merely self-improvement. It is divine empowerment.
Under the Old Covenant, God’s presence came upon people temporarily. But under the New Covenant, God dwells within believers permanently. This is why the believer must stop seeing himself as ordinary. You may look physically ordinary, but spiritually you are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3:16: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God…?” The word “temple” comes from the Greek word naos, referring to the inner sanctuary; the dwelling place of deity. This means God no longer dwells merely in buildings made with hands; He dwells within His people. Think about this reality: The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now lives inside the believer.
Romans 8:11 says: “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you…” This is why believers must stop speaking from weakness constantly. Yes, challenges are real. Yes, warfare exists. Yes, pressures come. But there is a greater reality within the believer. The Holy Spirit gives strength in weakness, wisdom in confusion, peace in storms, and boldness in opposition. Many believers are too conscious of the devil and not conscious enough of Christ within them. Your focus determines your spiritual experience. Peter walked on water while looking at Jesus, but when he became conscious of the wind, fear overtook him. Victory grows where Christ-consciousness grows. The believer who constantly meditates on the indwelling Christ develops spiritual confidence and stability. You are not alone in your battles. God Himself is at work within you.
INSTRUCTION: Become more conscious daily of God’s presence within you. Speak words that agree with the reality of Christ in you instead of constantly magnifying weakness and fear.
PRAYER: Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. I carry the life, wisdom, strength, and power of God within me. Fear has no place in me, and I walk daily in boldness, dominion, and victory through Christ. Amen.
