” Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself” – Matthew 6:34
LIGHT FOR NOW: Much of anxiety is produced by trying to live tomorrow before it arrives. God gives grace for today and invites us to trust Him with the future.
One of the greatest sources of anxiety is the human desire to know and control what comes next. The mind travels into tomorrow, imagines possible problems, creates fearful conclusions, and then brings those imagined burdens back into today. Jesus speaks directly to this tendency: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow”. This does not mean believers should never plan for the future. Scripture encourages wisdom, preparation, and diligence. Jesus is not condemning responsible planning. He is addressing anxious worry. There is a difference between planning for tomorrow and worrying about tomorrow. Planning asks: “What can I wisely prepare for?” Anxiety asks: “What terrible thing might happen?” Planning acts with wisdom. Anxiety attempts to control what has not yet happened.
Jesus says: “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof”. In other words, every day has enough responsibilities without borrowing problems from tomorrow. Many people are exhausted today because they are carrying the weight of things that have not happened. They are fighting battles that do not yet exist. They are grieving losses that have not occurred. They are fearing outcomes that may never come. This is the cruelty of anxiety: It makes the mind experience pain in advance. But God never promised grace for an imaginary future. He gives grace for the day you are actually living. When tomorrow arrives, the grace of God will meet you there. This is why Jesus teaches us to live with trust. You do not know everything that tomorrow holds. But you know the One who holds tomorrow. The future is not unknown to God. Nothing will surprise Him. Nothing will appear beyond His wisdom. Nothing will happen outside His awareness.
This does not mean every future event will unfold exactly according to our personal expectations. But it means we never enter any season without the presence of God. The same God who has kept you until today will not suddenly become absent tomorrow. Anxiety wants you to solve your entire future in one moment. But life is not lived that way. You walk with God one day at a time, one step at a time, one grace at a time. God’s provision includes grace for the present moment. So today, come back from the future. Return your mind to where your feet are. Do what God has placed before you now; pray now, trust now, obey now, live now. You do not have to carry September’s ending while you are still living today’s assignment. Tomorrow belongs to God. Today is the place of your obedience. And when tomorrow becomes today, the God who is with you now will still be there. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: Whenever your mind begins to travel into fearful imaginations about the future today, gently return your attention to the present. Ask yourself: “What has God given me grace to do today?” Then do that and leave tomorrow with Him.
CONFESSION/PRAYER: Father, I refuse to carry tomorrow before it arrives. I release every fearful imagination about my future into Your hands. Give me grace to live faithfully in today and wisdom to do what is before me now. I trust that the God who is with me today will also be with me tomorrow. My future is not outside Your care, in Jesus Name. Amen.
