BE ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING (4)

” Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” – Isaiah 26:3

LIGHT FOR NOW:  Peace is not merely the absence of problems; it is the stability of a heart whose attention has learned to rest upon God.

Anxiety has a way of pulling the mind in many directions. One moment, the heart is thinking about what happened yesterday. The next moment, it is afraid of what may happen tomorrow. But Isaiah reveals a different way to live: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee”. The word translated “peace” is the Hebrew word shalom. It speaks of wholeness, completeness, soundness, and well-being. Interestingly, the phrase “perfect peace” literally carries the idea of shalom, shalom; peace upon peace. This peace is connected to where the mind is stayed. To stay the mind on God means to deliberately fix one’s attention upon Him. It does not mean that difficult thoughts will never come. It means that when they come, they do not become the permanent dwelling place of your mind. An anxious mind repeatedly magnifies the problem. A trusting mind repeatedly returns to God. This is not pretending that problems do not exist.
It is refusing to allow the problem to become greater in your consciousness than God. Whatever consistently occupies your mind will eventually influence your emotions. If you continually meditate on danger, fear will grow. If you continually meditate on uncertainty, anxiety will grow. But when the mind learns to meditate on God’s faithfulness, character, and promises, peace begins to guard the heart. Notice the reason Isaiah gives: “Because he trusteth in thee”. Peace is connected to trust. You cannot truly rest in someone you do not trust. Many anxious thoughts are ultimately questions of trust: “Will everything be okay?” “What if God does not come through?” “What if I cannot handle what happens?” Trust answers: “God is faithful, and I will not face life apart from Him”.
This does not mean faith requires us to know every detail of the future. Trust is powerful precisely because it rests in God even when every detail is not visible. The mind will always have something upon which to stay. The question is: What are you fixing it upon? Your fears? Your limitations? The opinions of people? The uncertainty of tomorrow? Or the God who remains faithful in every season? Peace is not always automatic. Sometimes you must deliberately redirect your thoughts. You may need to stop rehearsing the problem and begin rehearsing God’s promise. You may need to stop asking the same fearful question and begin declaring what you know about God. The mind stayed on God becomes a mind increasingly strengthened by His peace.
So today, guard the direction of your thoughts. When anxiety attempts to take your mind captive, bring your attention back to the One who never changes. God is still faithful. God is still present. God is still wise. God is still in control. And a mind that learns to remain upon Him can experience peace even in the middle of an uncertain world. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Whenever an anxious thought enters your mind today, consciously redirect your attention to a truth about God. Meditate on His faithfulness instead of repeatedly rehearsing the problem.

CONFESSION/PRAYER: Father, I fix my mind upon You. I refuse to allow fear and uncertainty to dominate my thoughts. You are faithful, wise, and always present with me. Teach me to trust You even when I do not understand every situation. Keep my heart and mind in Your peace as I continually set my attention upon You, in Jesus Name.  Amen.
