“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh” – 2Corinthians 10:3
LIGHT FOR NOW: The believer may live in a physical world, but he was never designed to fight with merely physical methods. Spiritual victory requires spiritual understanding.
One major reason many believers struggle in their walk is because they attempt to fight spiritual battles with natural wisdom, emotions, or human strength. But scripture makes it clear that our warfare is not after the flesh. Paul says, “Though we walk in the flesh…” This means we still live in human bodies and operate within the physical realm. We go to work, attend school, interact with people, and face real-life challenges. Yet despite living in this world physically, our warfare is spiritual.
The word “war” in this passage comes from the Greek word strateuomai, meaning “to serve as a soldier,” “to engage in military warfare,” or “to carry out strategic combat.” This reveals that the Christian life is not casual; it is a spiritual engagement. However, our weapons are different. Verse 4 says: “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God…” The word “weapons” comes from the Greek word hoplon, referring to instruments used in battle. Paul is showing us that believers have been equipped by God with spiritual weapons powerful enough to pull down strongholds.
This means the believer is not helpless against darkness. Heaven has supplied spiritual resources for victory. What are these weapons? The word of God, prayer, faith, the authority of the name of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. Many believers lose battles because they depend solely on emotions or human calculations. But spiritual victory does not come through panic, anxiety, or fleshly striving. Victory comes through alignment with God’s truth.
When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He did not argue emotionally with Satan. He responded with scripture: “It is written…” Why? Because the word of God is a weapon. Ephesians 6:17 calls the word “the sword of the Spirit.” The Greek word for “sword” there is machaira, referring to a short but sharp weapon used in close combat. This means God’s word is designed for precise spiritual warfare. Many believers admire the Bible devotionally but do not wield it strategically. Yet victory comes when revelation becomes application. The enemy fears believers who know the word because light destroys deception.
This is why your mind must continually be renewed through scripture. Strongholds are broken when divine truth enters the heart. A “stronghold” in 2Corinthians 10:4 comes from the Greek word ochuroma, meaning a fortress or fortified prison. Many battles believers face begin first in the mind; fear, condemnation, inferiority, doubt, and deception. But when God’s word floods the heart, those mental fortresses begin to collapse. Victory is not accidental. It is the result of walking in the light of God’s truth.
INSTRUCTION: Feed your spirit daily with God’s word. Do not wait for battles before learning scripture. A prepared believer stands stronger in warfare.
PRAYER: I refuse to fight with human strength alone. The word of God is alive in me, and through Christ I pull down every stronghold of fear, doubt, and deception. I walk in spiritual wisdom, authority, and victory. Amen.
