THE FATHER’S LOVE (PART 18)

“Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” – Ephesians 1:5

LIGHT FOR NOW: The Father’s love was not an afterthought. Before redemption was accomplished in history, it already existed in the heart of God.

One of the most astonishing truths in Scripture is that God’s love for His people did not begin when they believed the gospel. Neither did it begin when Christ died on the cross. The Father’s plan of love reaches far beyond human history. Paul writes: “Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children…” The word “predestinated” comes from the Greek word “proorizo”, meaning to determine beforehand, to mark out in advance, or to decide ahead of time. This does not mean God arbitrarily chose some people to be saved and others to be lost. Rather, Paul is emphasizing that God’s redemptive plan was established before history unfolded. Before sin entered the world, before Adam fell, before humanity’s rebellion; the Father already had a plan centered in Christ. This reveals something beautiful about God’s love. The fall of man did not surprise Him. Redemption was not God’s emergency response to an unexpected problem.
The cross was not Plan B. Christ was always at the center of God’s purpose. This is why Revelation speaks of Jesus as: “The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”. Before mankind ever became lost, the Father’s heart was already moving toward restoration. Paul says this plan involved: “…the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself”. Again, we encounter the language of family. Notice carefully: The goal was adoption. The Father did not merely desire servants; He desired sons and daughters; He did not merely desire worshippers; He desired children. This reveals the heart behind redemption. The Father’s ultimate purpose was relationship. Many believers think primarily about what they have been saved from; saved from sin, saved from judgment, saved from death; and rightly so. But Scripture also emphasizes what believers have been saved into; into fellowship, into sonship, into relationship with the Father, and into His family.
Paul then adds a remarkable phrase: “…to himself”. This may be one of the most beautiful phrases in the passage. The Father did not simply save us for heaven. He saved us unto Himself. The destination of redemption is not merely a place; it is a Person. The Father wanted His children near Him. This has been God’s desire throughout Scripture. In Eden, He walked with man. In the tabernacle, He dwelt among His people. In Christ, He came to humanity. Through the Spirit, He dwells within believers. And one day, He will dwell visibly with His redeemed forever. The Father’s love has always been moving toward communion and fellowship. Paul then reveals the motivation behind all of this: “…according to the good pleasure of his will”. This is profound.
God did not adopt believers reluctantly. He did not save them unwillingly. He did not redeem them out of obligation. He did it because it pleased Him. The phrase “good pleasure” speaks of delight, satisfaction, and joyful purpose. In other words, adoption was not something the Father endured. It was something He desired. The Father delights in having children. This truth should transform how believers see God. Many imagine Him perpetually disappointed, perpetually distant, and perpetually dissatisfied. But Scripture reveals a Father whose heart rejoices over His redeemed children; a Father who planned their adoption; a Father who paid for their redemption; a Father who delights in relationship with them. The Christian life therefore begins with a glorious realization: You are not an accident in God’s family. You are not a reluctant addition to His household. You are the object of a love that was purposed in Christ before the ages began. And the Father takes pleasure in calling you His child.

INSTRUCTION: Take time today to thank God for choosing to bring you into His family through Christ. Let gratitude fill your heart as you meditate on the Father’s eternal purpose of love.

CONFESSION/PRAYER: Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family through Jesus Christ. Thank You that Your love for me was part of Your eternal purpose. Help me to live daily with confidence, joy, and gratitude as Your beloved child. Amen.
