THE FATHER’S LOVE (PART 6)

“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” – Romans 8:15

LIGHT FOR NOW: The Father’s love does not merely forgive sinners; it adopts them into His family and gives them the privilege of calling Him Father.

One of the greatest blessings of salvation is often one of the least appreciated: adoption into the family of God. Many believers rejoice over forgiveness, and rightly so. Others celebrate healing, provision, and answered prayers; but beyond all these blessings lies something even more profound; the privilege of becoming God’s children. Paul writes: “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear…” The word “bondage” speaks of slavery, servitude, and captivity. Before Christ, humanity lived under various forms of bondage; bondage to sin, bondage to guilt, bondage to condemnation, bondage to fear. Many people relate to God through fear rather than relationship. They see Him as distant; they see Him as perpetually angry; they see Him as looking for reasons to reject them.
But Paul says believers have not received that spirit. The gospel does not produce slavery. The gospel produces sonship. He continues: “But ye have received the Spirit of adoption…” The word “adoption” comes from the Greek word “huiothesia”, which literally means “the placing of a son”. In the Roman world, adoption was a powerful legal act. An adopted child received full rights, privileges, inheritance, and status within the family. Once adopted, that child was treated as a legitimate heir. Paul borrows this imagery to explain what God has done for believers. Salvation is not merely a legal pardon; it is a family welcome. The believer is not merely acquitted in God’s courtroom. He is embraced in God’s household.
This is one of the major themes of the Father’s love. God did not save us merely to populate heaven. He saved us to bring us into His family. This is why Jesus consistently referred to God as Father. Before Christ, the revelation of God as Father was not fully understood. But Jesus came to unveil the heart of the Father. In fact, one of the most revolutionary aspects of Jesus’ ministry was His constant emphasis on God’s fatherhood. He taught His disciples to pray: “Our Father…” Not merely: “Our Creator”, “Our Judge”, “Our King”. Though God is all these things, Jesus wanted believers to know Him first as Father. Paul then says: “…whereby we cry, Abba, Father”. The word “Abba” is an Aramaic term expressing intimacy, affection, trust, and closeness. It was the language of relationship. The language of a child secure in his father’s love. This is beautiful because Christianity is not primarily about religious distance; it is about relational nearness. The Father desires His children to approach Him with confidence. Not arrogance, not carelessness; but confidence.
Hebrews 4:16 says: “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace…” Why can believers come boldly? It is because they are loved, because they belong, because they have been adopted. One of the enemy’s greatest attacks against believers is the attack on identity. He wants believers to think like orphans rather than sons. Orphans constantly strive for acceptance; sons rest in acceptance. Orphans fear abandonment; sons trust the Father’s commitment. Orphans relate through insecurity; sons relate through confidence and love. The Father’s love therefore calls believers out of spiritual orphanhood into the security of sonship. You are not merely tolerated in God’s presence. You are welcomed, you are loved, and you are His child through Christ. And every day of your Christian journey should be lived from that revelation.

INSTRUCTION: Approach God today as your loving Father. Spend time talking to Him relationally, not merely presenting requests.

CONFESSION/PRAYER: Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family through Jesus Christ. I reject every spirit of fear, rejection, and insecurity. I rejoice in the privilege of being Your child and living daily in Your love. Amen.
