LIGHT FOR NOW: The Father’s love was never meant to stop with us. It is a river to flow through us, not merely a reservoir to be stored within us.
One of the clearest evidences that a believer truly understands the Father’s love is found in how that believer treats other people. The Christian life was never designed to be merely the reception of love. It was designed to become the expression of love. John writes: “Beloved, if God so loved us…” Notice how John addresses the believers; “Beloved”. Those who have received the Father’s love become the beloved of God. Their identity is rooted in divine affection. But John does not stop there. He immediately moves from receiving love to expressing love: “…we ought also to love one another”. This is one of the central themes of the New Testament. The Father’s love transforms the believer and then flows outward toward others. This is exactly what Jesus taught. When asked about the greatest commandment, He spoke of loving God and loving one’s neighbor. Why? It is because genuine love for God inevitably affects how we relate to people. Many people desire a deep spiritual life while neglecting love for others. But Scripture refuses to separate the two.
John later writes: “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar”. Strong words, but John’s point is clear. The reality of God’s love should produce visible fruit. Love received becomes love expressed. This does not mean believers will never struggle with difficult people; they will. People can disappoint us, misunderstand us, offend us, and wound us. Yet the Father’s love empowers believers to respond differently. Why? It is because Christian love is not merely human affection. It is divine love operating through redeemed hearts. The Greek word often used for God’s love is agape. It refers to a self-giving, sacrificial, and purposeful love. It seeks the good of others. It is not primarily driven by feelings. It is driven by commitment. This is why Jesus could command believers to love even their enemies. Human strength alone cannot accomplish this. But the Father’s love working through the believer can.
The cross itself provides the greatest example. While humanity was still in rebellion, Christ died for sinners. The Father loved those who could not yet love Him back. This reveals the nature of divine love; it initiates, it gives, it sacrifices, and it pursues. The believer who understands this begins to see people differently. Instead of merely asking: “How can this person benefit me?” He begins asking: “How can I reveal God’s love to this person?” Instead of holding tightly to offenses, he becomes quicker to forgive. Instead of responding with bitterness, he responds with grace. Instead of seeking revenge, he seeks reconciliation. This does not mean ignoring wisdom or boundaries. Love is not weakness. Love is strength under the control of God. It speaks truth. It pursues righteousness. But it does so with a heart shaped by the Father’s affection.
One of the greatest testimonies the church can offer the world is genuine love. Jesus said: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another”. Notice He did not say the world would primarily recognize believers by their knowledge, gifts, or activities. The distinguishing mark would be love. Why? It is because love reflects the Father’s nature. The more believers grow in understanding the Father’s love, the more they become living demonstrations of that love. And through them, the world catches a glimpse of the Father’s heart.
INSTRUCTION: Ask the Lord today to show you someone who needs encouragement, forgiveness, kindness, or compassion. Intentionally become a channel of the Father’s love.
CONFESSION/PRAYER: Father, thank You for loving me so richly through Christ. Help me to reflect Your love in my words, actions, and attitudes. Let Your love flow through me and touch the lives of those around me. Amen.
