“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” – Matthew 7:11
LIGHT FOR NOW: The Father’s love is not theoretical. It is practical, generous, and actively involved in the lives of His children.
One of the most powerful teaching methods Jesus employed was comparison. He would often begin with something familiar and then use it to reveal something greater. In this passage, He points to earthly fathers. He says: “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children…” Jesus is not saying that every earthly father is completely wicked. Rather, He is emphasizing the contrast between fallen humanity and the perfection of God. Even imperfect fathers often desire good things for their children. They want their children fed; they want them protected; they want them to flourish. A loving father rejoices when his child thrives. He does not delight in the child’s suffering. He does not enjoy withholding what is beneficial. His heart naturally inclines toward the welfare of his children. Jesus then introduces one of the most beautiful phrases in Scripture: “How much more…” Whenever Jesus uses this phrase, He is moving from the lesser to the greater.
If imperfect fathers can show kindness, care, and generosity; how much more will the perfect Father? If flawed fathers can provide; how much more will the heavenly Father? If earthly fathers can love imperfectly; how much more will the Father whose very nature is love? This is exactly what Jesus wants believers to understand. The Father is better than our best examples of fatherhood. And unlike human fathers, He has no limitations. Human fathers may want to help but lack resources; God possesses unlimited resources. Human fathers may have good intentions but lack wisdom; God possesses perfect wisdom. Human fathers may occasionally misunderstand; God understands completely. This means believers can approach the Father with confidence. Notice Jesus says: “…your Father which is in heaven…” The emphasis is personal. Not merely “the Father”, but “your Father”.
Christianity is not simply about believing that God exists. It is about relating to Him as Father through Jesus Christ. Many believers know this doctrinally but struggle practically. When needs arise, they become anxious. When challenges come, they become fearful. When delays occur, they become discouraged. Yet Jesus repeatedly taught His disciples to trust the Father’s care. A few verses earlier, He speaks about birds and flowers. The birds do not worry about provision. The flowers do not strive for beauty. Yet the Father cares for them. Then Jesus essentially asks: Are you not worth much more than they? This is not because humanity is inherently superior. It is because believers stand in a covenant relationship with God through Christ. The Father who feeds birds has adopted you as His child. The Father who clothes the lilies has called you His own. The Father who governs creation is attentive to your life.
This does not mean every request receives an immediate yes. A wise father does not grant every request exactly as a child desires. Sometimes he gives differently. Sometimes he delays. Sometimes he says no because he sees what the child cannot see. But even those answers flow from love. The Father’s goodness is not measured by whether He gives us everything we ask for. His goodness is measured by the perfection of His wisdom and love. The Father always gives what aligns with His wisdom, His purpose, and His love. Therefore, believers can rest. Not because they understand everything, but because they trust the Father’s heart. The Christian life becomes far more peaceful when we stop viewing God as a reluctant giver and start seeing Him as the loving Father Jesus revealed.
INSTRUCTION: Bring your needs before God today with confidence. Pray as a beloved child speaking to a loving Father, trusting both His generosity and His wisdom.
CONFESSION/PRAYER: Father, thank You for being a good and loving Father. I choose to trust Your heart, Your wisdom, and Your provision. Help me to live free from anxiety and full of confidence in Your faithful care. Amen.
