“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on the candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” – Matthew 5:14-16
LIGHT FOR NOW: We are light personified, and vessels to shine the light of the glorious gospel of Christ in this dark world.
From Paul’s words in 2Corinthians 6:14-16, it’s clear that what the believer is and the unbeliever is, are opposites.
- The believer is light
- The unbeliever is darkness.
Meaning, you and the unbeliever are not the same. When Paul said, “Let your light so shine before men” in our key text, it will be out of place to think of that light as different from Christ. Hence, in 2Corinthians 4:3-6, Paul says “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the God of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ”.
Paul in the above text brings in Matthew 5:14-16, and if you observe closely you’ll discover that Paul is explaining Genesis 1:2-3 and Isaiah 60:1-5 for us. He makes it clear that God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness has shined in our heart. He lets us know that if the light is shining in our hearts, then darkness will be the state of man’s heart without the light. So that light shining in our hearts will be about salvation obviously. And to show us that this light shining in our hearts is a person, Paul adds “to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ”. Hence, that light is Christ and this is salvation. And this light shines in men’s heart as they believe the gospel. Paul in verse 4 equally calls this light “the light of the glorious gospel of Christ”. And in verse 5, he says “we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus”. So when Jesus says “Let your light so shine”, you can’t think of that light differently from Christ; that light is Christ and via the gospel of Christ, we shine that light. Glory!

CONFESSION: I declare that I am not just the light but a vessel to shine the light which is the glorious gospel of Christ to the dying world.
QUOTE: You are not just the light but equally a vessel to shine the light.
