SHINING THE LIGHT (4)

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on the candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” – Matthew 5:14-16

LIGHT FOR NOW: We have been made lights in the Lord for the purpose of shining the light by heralding the glorious gospel of Christ in every place.

From Paul’s words in 2Corinthians 4:3-6, it would be out of place to think that the statement “Let your light so shine before men” to be different from Christ or the glorious gospel of Christ. Paul makes it clear that this light is Christ or the glorious gospel is Christ. “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are light in the Lord: walk therefore as children of light: (For the fruit of the spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth)”. Paul says that we are light in the Lord. And he thus instructs us to walk (that is conduct ourselves) as children of light. We don’t conduct ourselves as children of light to be light; we are light already hence we conduct ourselves in that nature. So, I don’t just have light, I am light in this world. We are children of light; we are products of light. Therefore, we are lights in this world, and not just light but vessels to shine the light via the glorious gospel of Christ.

In Philippians 2:12-15, Paul shows us how we shine the light. He says we shine this light as we herald the gospel. Philippians 2:12-15 reads “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmuring and disputing: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither labored in vain”. He tells us that we shine as lights in the world (in verse 15) and in verse 16, he shows us how we shine as lights in the world, he says “holding forth the word of life”. That word “holding forth” is the Greek word that means to lift up a banner; to herald. Hence, we shine as lights by heralding the gospel of Christ; by lifting up the gospel of Christ as a banner. Therefore, we are lights and vessels to shine the light. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Shine the light.

PRAYER: I declare that as a child of light, I consciously avail myself as a vessel in the preaching of the gospel so as to get the light of the gospel of Christ shone in every place.

QUOTE: As believers, we shine the light.
