THE ZOE OF GOD (1)

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand” – John 10:28-29

LIGHT FOR NOW: The very life of God which is eternal life is a free gift made available in Christ for humanity to receive.

The word “zoe” is not an English word, but a Greek word which is used to describe the life of God or the life that came from God to us in some contexts of scriptures. In our key text above, Jesus opens by saying “I give unto them eternal life”. Notice the English word “eternal life” used there; that’s where we have the Greek word “zoe” which speaks of the life that comes from God in this context. It is the very life of God. Observe, Jesus says “I give unto them eternal life”. Notice what Jesus did not say as we list them below. He did not say:

  • I might give unto them eternal life.
  • I shall give unto them eternal life.
  • I may give unto them eternal life.
  • I will give them eternal life on the last day.
  • I will give them eternal life at the end of life.
  • I will give unto them eternal life in heaven.

Jesus never said “I give unto them eternal life”. This tells us the following:

  • Eternal life is given.
  • For eternal life to be given, it means this life is received.
  • For this life to be received because it is given, it means eternal life will be a free gift.
  • And if Jesus is the one giving this life, it will mean eternal life is in the person of Jesus.
  • Outside of Jesus, a man will not have eternal life.
  • Eternal life will be a person and in a person.

The word “them” shows the ones that Jesus has given eternal life; “them that have believed”. So as a believer, you have received eternal life as a free gift of God to you. Eternal life is a gift in Christ which you received at new birth. So you have the gift called “eternal life”. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: You have the gift of eternal life, acknowledge this!

CONFESSION: I declare that I have received the gift of eternal life in Christ. I have the life of God working in me. Amen!

QUOTE: Eternal life is a gift to be received, and not something that is worked for.
