“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on the candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” – Matthew 5:14-16

LIGHT FOR NOW: The believer and the unbeliever are not the same. The believer is light and the unbeliever is darkness.

The very heart of the statement “Let your light so shine before men” will be about the light of salvation before the unsaved to get them saved. Hence, the men the light is shining before here are men in darkness. After Isaiah in Isaiah 60:1 says “Arise and shine; for thy light is come…” the next statement in verse 2 reveals men in darkness; that is, gross darkness in men. The unbeliever will be darkness, and the believer light. That’s why Paul shades more light in this in 2Corinthians 6:14-16 which reads “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people”. Paul is asking rhetorical questions in the above texts and one of it is: What communion hath light with darkness? In other words, he singles out the believer as light and the unbeliever in darkness.

We are not shining to be light; we are shining because we are light. We are not shining because we want to become lights, we are shining as lights. Light is your very nature; light is your very being. The light of God is your very life. You and the unbeliever are not the same. The unbeliever is darkness and you are light. Light is what you are, and light therefore is what you dispense to the unsaved (the unbelievers) by the message of salvation. Light is your nature, there is no variableness about that concerning you since there’s no variableness about that concerning God. James echoed “Every good gift and perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17). Light is who you are and light is what you dispense. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Say with your mouth what God has said in his word about you.

CONFESSION: I declare in alignment with God’s word that light is my very being. I dispense the light because I am the light.

QUOTE: We don’t shine to be lights; we shine because we are lights.
