“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” – Mark 16:15-18
LIGHT FOR NOW:
We saw in the context of Jesus’ words in Matthew 20:26-28 and Mark 10:43-45, that Jesus described himself as coming to the world to minister. That is, Jesus described himself as a servant of God. Paul’s corroboration in Philippians 2:5-8 strengthens this, it reads “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name”. So, he took upon the form of a servant. Also, notice his words after he described himself as a servant; “…to give his life a ransom for many”.
It is vital to note that Jesus explained this same truth shortly before his death; Matthew 26:26-28 shows us that, it reads “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that; day when I drink it new with you in my father’s kingdom”. The same account of Matthew 26:26-29 is documented in Mark 14:22-25.
Therefore, at this point it suffices us to say that when Jesus said “Even as the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many”, he was referring to his work of salvation, that is his death, burial and most importantly his resurrection from the dead. In other words, Jesus described his work as service and servanthood. Hallelujah!
