“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” – Mark 16:15-18
LIGHT FOR NOW: Jesus described himself as a servant of God.
We are still answering the question: Who is the minister of the gospel? Having seen what the word “minister” means from our lead text which is Matthew 20:26-28, we proceeded to examining what Jesus meant in context which is where we are going to take up from. From the two Greek words for “minister” (Diakoneo and Diakonos), a minister primarily is one who serves, that is a servant. So we said the first thing to note from Jesus’ explanation in context is that: Jesus explained greatness in God’s kingdom as servanthood and service. This is different from the way the world sees and understand greatness. Secondly, observe that from Jesus’ words in both Matthew 20 and Mark 10, he referred to himself as him coming to the world to minister. That is, Jesus described himself as “a servant of God”.
Matthew 20:28 “Even as the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a ransom for many”. Mark 10:45 “For even the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many”. Paul taught the same truth about Jesus in his letters; Philippians 2:5-8 is a perfect example, it reads “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name”. He took the form of a servant; what does this tell us? Hallelujah!
INSTRUCTION: Serve in God’s kingdom by serving the church.
PRAYER: The truth of God’s word is made available to me in the study of his word, in Jesus Name, Amen.
QUOTE: In God’s kingdom, you are great because you serve.
