“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” – Mark 16:15-18
LIGHT FOR NOW: The church of Christ has the message of the gospel which is the gospel of Christ.
As the studies advanced, we’ve come to see that where Paul uses the word “gospel” in 1st and 2nd Corinthians, the emphasis was on:
“Preach or preaching” (preach the gospel).
“Christ” (the gospel of Christ).
The gospel is a message that is communicated by preaching.
The gospel is Christ centred or it focuses on Christ.
Let’s reiterate the fact that in1Corinthians 15, Paul emphatically used the phrase “according to the scriptures”. And the use of that term the ‘scriptures’ was not in reference to the synoptic gospels but in reference to the Old Testament. This is similar to his explanation in Romans 1:1-2. In other words, we can imply that the gospel is a message in the Old Testament books of the bible (Genesis to Malachi), and Paul got his facts from them. The writer of Hebrews also spoke about this in his epistle; “Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise of being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world” (Hebrews 4:1-3).
The “them” in context of Hebrews 4 referred to the Jewish fathers in the wilderness, especially in Kardesh Barnea, which the writer initially spoke of in chapter 3 (Hebrews 3:8-17). And the scenario explained by the writer in Hebrews 3:8-17 is historically found in Numbers 32:8-13. So, the gospel is a message to be preached, that is, Christ centered, and a message found in the scriptures (Genesis to Malachi). We have a Christ centered gospel and thus, the material in which this gospel will be communicated from the bible will be Christ centred. Hallelujah!!!
