“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” – Mark 16:15-18
LIGHT FOR NOW: The same fact in 1st and 2nd Corinthians as touching the gospel is what Paul re-echoes in Galatians.
We have looked through the usage of the word “gospel” in 1st and 2nd Corinthians and it’s clear that the emphasis was on:
“Preach or preaching” (preach the gospel).
“Christ” (the gospel of Christ).
Also, Paul’s use of the word “the scriptures” points to Genesis to Malachi (the Old Testament) and this lets us know that the gospel is a message present in the Old Testament. Let’s see if Paul buttresses or lays emphasis on this same fact in the book of Galatians. In Galatians 1, Paul has this to say “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed… But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man” (Galatians 1:6-9, 11).
Here in Galatians 1, just like he did in the book of 1st and 2nd Corinthians, two words majorly were used in describing the gospel: preach and Christ. This further establishes the fact that the focus of the gospel is a person; Christ. Thus, the gospel of Christ must speak about Christ according to the scriptures. Paul echoes this in Galatians 2 “And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them the gospel which I preached among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you… But contrariwise, when they saw the gospel of the uncircumcision (the gospel preached unto the circumcision) was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter. But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, if thou, being a Jew, lives after the manner of Gentiles, and not as the Jews, why compel thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?” (Galatians 2:2, 5, 7 and 14). We will see what Paul meant in the above text in the next study. Hallelujah!
