“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” – Mark 16:15-18

LIGHT FOR NOW: To be fully armed with the gospel of Christ, know Christ from the scriptures.

As we preached to examine Paul’s use of the word “gospel” in Galatians and what the emphasis was on, we saw that in Galatians 1:6-9, 11, just like he did in the book of 1st and 2nd Corinthians, two words majorly were used in describing the gospel, “preach” and “Christ”. And this further establishes the fact that the gospel is a message of a person; Christ. In Galatians 2 where we were, Paul has this to say, “And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them the gospel which I preached among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you… But contrariwise, when they saw the gospel of the uncircumcision (the gospel preached unto the circumcision) was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter. But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, if thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as the Jews, why compel thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?” (Galatians 2:2, 5, 7 and 14),

The phrase, “the truth of the gospel” was used twice by Paul (in verse 5 and 14). When he said (Peter inclusive), they walked not according to the truth of the gospel, it can only be understood in context of the same chapter or book of Galatians. Paul in the proceeding verses explained clearly what he meant by saying that Peter and others did not work according to the truth of the gospel, by separating himself (themselves) from Gentiles: “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ… I am crucified with Christ… I do not frustrate the grace of God…” (Galatians 2:16, 17, 20 and 21). The truth of the gospel in context is that Christ died for all (Jews and Gentiles) and also that justification is not by the works/deeds of the law but by the faith of Jesus Christ. Again, this portrays that Christ Jesus is the subject matter of the gospel. Hallelujah!
