“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise” – Ephesians 1:13
LIGHT FOR NOW: The Holy Spirit is not merely a spiritual influence we experience; He is God’s seal upon the believer. His presence declares that we belong to Christ and have been marked out as God’s own.
Paul says, “After that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise”. Notice the progression: you heard, you believed, and you were sealed. The gospel is not merely information that enters the mind. When it is believed, the Holy Spirit becomes God’s personal mark upon the believer. The Greek word sphragizo means to seal, mark, authenticate, or secure with a seal. In the ancient world, a seal could identify ownership, authenticate a document, or indicate that something belonged to a particular person.
This gives us a beautiful picture of salvation. God has not left the believer wondering whether he belongs to Him. He has given His Spirit as His seal. Paul says in 2Corinthians 1:22 that God “hath sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts”. The seal therefore speaks of belonging. You are not spiritually abandoned, ownerless, or without identity. The Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence testifies that you belong to God. But the seal also speaks of authenticity. A seal identifies what is genuine. The Spirit’s presence in the believer is part of God’s testimony that we are His people. This is why Christianity is not merely about adopting Christian behaviour.
The believer has received the Spirit of God. There is a divine presence within. There is a new identity. There is a new relationship with God. And there is a divine mark upon the believer pointing toward the inheritance God has prepared. Ephesians 1:14 calls the Spirit “the earnest of our inheritance”. So the Holy Spirit is both a present reality and a promise pointing forward. What God has begun in us is connected to what He will ultimately complete. Therefore, do not treat the Holy Spirit as an optional addition to Christianity. He is God’s seal upon the believer. His presence reminds you: I belong to God. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: Throughout today, consciously acknowledge the Holy Spirit’s presence in you. Let your identity be shaped by the truth that you belong to God and have been sealed by His Spirit.
CONFESSION: I have believed the gospel, and I have been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. I belong to God. His Spirit dwells in me, marks me as His own, and bears witness to the inheritance He has prepared for me, in Jesus Name. Amen.
