OUR UNION WITH CHRIST (15)

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” – Philippians 1:21

LIGHT FOR NOW: Union with Christ is not merely a doctrine we believe; it is a life we express. When Christ becomes our life, He begins to shape what we value, how we think, how we respond, and how we live.

Paul makes a remarkable statement: “For to me to live is Christ”. Notice that he does not say, “Christ helps me to live.” He says, “to live is Christ”. This is the language of deep union. Throughout this devotional, we have seen that we are crucified with Christ, raised with Him, seated with Him, hidden with Him, abiding in Him, and being transformed into His image. Now we arrive at the practical expression of all these realities: Christ becomes the centre of our living.

The Greek word zao means “to live.” Paul is speaking about the whole reality of his earthly existence. His life had been redefined by Christ. His ambitions were affected. His relationships were affected. His ministry was affected. His suffering was affected. Even his understanding of death was affected. This is what union with Christ does. It changes not only what we believe about Jesus but what our lives are about. If Christ is our life, then our faith cannot remain confined to church meetings. Christ must influence our conversations, decisions, relationships, work, studies, money, ambitions, responses, and private moments.
The question is no longer merely, “What does Christianity teach?” The deeper question is: “How does Christ live through me?” Galatians 2:20 gives us the foundation: “Christ liveth in me”.

Philippians 1:21 gives us the expression: “To me to live is Christ”. One speaks of Christ’s life within us; the other speaks of that life becoming the substance of our daily existence. This does not mean that we lose our personality or become another human being. Rather, our humanity becomes increasingly surrendered to the purposes, character, and life of Christ. The goal of union is not that Christ remains hidden as a theological concept. The goal is that His life becomes visible through us.
When people encounter our patience, love, humility, integrity, forgiveness, courage, and compassion, they should increasingly see something of Christ. This is why union with Christ is more than a doctrine to memorize. It is a reality to live. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Before making your decisions today, ask: “What would it look like for Christ to be expressed here?” Let your words, choices, and attitudes become practical expressions of the life of Christ in you.

CONFESSION: Christ is my life. I am united with Him, and His life is being expressed through me. My thoughts, words, choices, relationships, and actions increasingly reveal the character of Christ. I live from Him, through Him, and for Him, in Jesus Name. Amen!
