LIGHT FOR NOW: The divine nature is not merely a doctrine to believe; it is a divine indwelling to experience. God has not only called us to Himself; He has come to dwell within us.
One of the most astonishing truths of the New Covenant is the reality of God’s indwelling presence. Under the Old Testament, God’s presence was associated with places. He met Moses on the mountain. He filled the tabernacle. He manifested His glory in Solomon’s temple. His presence came upon prophets, priests, and kings for divine assignments. But under the New Covenant, something far greater has happened. God no longer merely dwells among His people. He now dwells within His people.
John writes: “Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us…” This is the language of union. The believer lives in Christ. Christ lives in the believer. This is not poetry; it is spiritual reality. The phrase “he in us” summarizes one of the greatest miracles of redemption. The infinite God has chosen to make the believer His dwelling place. John explains how this is possible: “Because he hath given us of his Spirit”. The Holy Spirit is not merely a divine influence. He is the very Spirit of God dwelling within every believer. Through His indwelling, the life of God continually operates in us.
This is why Paul asks the Corinthians: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” Notice the present tense. The Spirit dwelleth in you; not occasionally, not only during church services, not only when you feel spiritual; He dwells in you continually. The word “dwelleth” comes from the Greek word oikeo, meaning to reside permanently, to make one’s home, or to inhabit. The Holy Spirit is not a visitor; He is a permanent resident. This truth should completely transform how believers see themselves.
Many Christians constantly pray for God to come near. Yet the New Testament reveals that through the Holy Spirit, God has already made His home within them. This does not eliminate the need for fresh encounters with God. Rather, every encounter flows from the reality of His abiding presence. The believer does not seek God as one who is absent; He fellowships with God as One who is present. This indwelling is one of the clearest evidences that we are partakers of the divine nature.
God has shared His life with us by giving us His Spirit. The Holy Spirit teaches us, comforts us, guides us, strengthens us, convicts us, empowers us, and continually reveals Christ to us. He is the divine witness within every believer that we belong to God. This is why the Christian life can never be reduced to external religion. Religion focuses on outward rituals. Christianity is the indwelling Christ living through the believer by the Holy Spirit. What an extraordinary privilege! The God whom the heavens cannot contain has chosen your spirit as His dwelling place.
Therefore, never say you are alone. Never believe you have been abandoned. Never think you face life’s battles by yourself. Wherever you go, the Spirit goes. Whatever you face, He is with you. Whatever God calls you to do; He supplies His presence and power from within. That is the glorious reality of those who partake of the divine nature. Hallelujah!
INSTRUCTION: Throughout today, consciously acknowledge the Holy Spirit’s presence within you. Before making decisions, speaking, or responding to situations, remember that God lives in you.
CONFESSION: Father, thank You for giving me Your Holy Spirit. Thank You that You have made my spirit Your dwelling place. Help me to remain conscious of Your presence throughout each day and to allow Your divine life to be expressed through everything I do, in Jesus’ name, Amen. Glory!
