“Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory” – Ephesians 1:14
LIGHT FOR NOW: The Holy Spirit is God’s present pledge of our future inheritance. We have been sealed, indwelt, and identified as God’s own, and the Spirit continually points us toward the fullness of what God has prepared in Christ.
Paul calls the Holy Spirit “the earnest of our inheritance”. We have come a long way in this devotional. We have seen that the Spirit seals us, confirms our identity, bears witness to our sonship, empowers our witness, leads us, fills us, and teaches us to walk in fellowship with God. Now Paul brings our attention to something greater: inheritance.
The Greek word arrhabon, translated “earnest,” means a pledge, deposit, or guarantee of what is to come. The Holy Spirit is therefore God’s present pledge concerning our future. There is something we have now, and there is something still awaiting its fullness. We have the Spirit now. We have sonship now. We have fellowship with God now. We have redemption now. But Scripture also points toward the consummation of these realities.
The Spirit within us is therefore a divine reminder that God’s promises are moving toward their appointed fullness. And notice where Paul places the emphasis: “Unto the praise of his glory”. The ultimate purpose is not merely that we receive blessings. It is that God’s glory is displayed. The entire work of salvation – from Christ’s death and resurrection to the Spirit’s indwelling and the final redemption of our bodies reveals the wisdom, grace, faithfulness, and glory of God. Therefore, do not treat the Holy Spirit’s presence as ordinary.
God Himself has chosen to dwell in His people. You have been sealed. You have been given the Spirit as a pledge. You have been brought into sonship. You have been made a participant in the life of Christ. And you are being led toward the fullness of God’s redemptive purpose. This means the believer can live with both assurance and expectation; assurance because God has marked us as His own. Expectation because what He has begun has a promised consummation.
So, as we conclude this devotional series, remember the central truth: You are not merely waiting for God’s promise. You are carrying its present pledge. The Holy Spirit in you is a divine testimony that you belong to God and that your story in Christ is moving toward fullness. Live conscious of His presence; walk in His leading; yield to His influence; honour His holiness. And keep your hope fixed on Christ. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: Do not merely finish this devotional and move on. Continue cultivating fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Let His presence shape your identity, conduct, prayer, witness, and hope.
CONFESSION: I am sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. I belong to God, I am His child, and His Spirit dwells in me. I walk in the Spirit, yield to His leading, honour His presence, and live with confident hope in the fullness of my inheritance in Christ. My life is unto the praise of God’s glory, in Jesus Name. Amen.
