THE FATHER’S LOVE (PART 11)

“The Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.” – John 16:27

LIGHT FOR NOW: One of the most life-changing truths a believer can discover is that the Father does not merely love humanity generally; He loves each believer personally.

There are certain statements in Scripture that are so profound that they deserve to be read slowly and repeatedly. This is one of them. Jesus says: “The Father himself loveth you…” Pause and meditate on those words. Not merely: “The Father tolerates you”; “The Father accepts you reluctantly”; “The Father puts up with you”. No! “The Father himself loveth you”. Jesus wanted His disciples to understand something revolutionary: the Father’s love is personal. Many people view God as distant and impersonal. They believe He loves the church, He loves His people, and He loves the world. But they struggle to believe He loves them individually. Yet Jesus deliberately makes this personal. “The Father himself loveth you”.
The word “loveth” comes from the Greek word “phileo”, which speaks of affection, friendship, fondness, and warm personal love. This is remarkable. While Scripture often uses agape to describe God’s sacrificial love, Jesus here uses a word emphasizing affection and closeness. In other words, the Father is not merely committed to you. He delights in you; He is not merely your Creator; He is your loving Father. One of the reasons many believers struggle with intimacy with God is because they unconsciously project human experiences onto Him. Perhaps earthly relationships have disappointed them. Perhaps affection was withheld. Perhaps acceptance felt conditional. As a result, they assume God relates to them in the same way. But the Father is not a larger version of flawed human relationships. He is the perfect Father. Every good quality found in fatherhood originates from Him.
This is why Paul says in Ephesians: “Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named”. Earthly fatherhood is meant to reflect Him, not the other way around. Jesus continues: “…because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God”. Notice that faith in Christ brings believers into the experience of the Father’s love. The Father and the Son are not working against one another. Sometimes people imagine Jesus as loving while the Father is stern. But Jesus came precisely to reveal the Father’s heart. Everything Christ did flowed from the Father’s love. The cross was not Jesus convincing an unwilling Father to love humanity. The cross was the Father expressing His love through the Son.
John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world, that he gave…” The Father was the initiator. The Father was the giver. The Father was the sender. The Father’s heart has always been inclined toward redemption. This truth should profoundly affect how believers pray. Many approach prayer trying to persuade God to care. But Jesus reveals that believers are already loved before they begin praying. Prayer is not convincing a reluctant Father; prayer is communing with a loving Father.
Likewise, believers should not approach God with constant uncertainty regarding His disposition toward them. The Father’s heart has been revealed. The cross has settled the matter. The resurrection has confirmed it. You are loved personally, intentionally and deeply. Not because you are flawless, not because you have achieved spiritual perfection; but because you belong to Christ. One of the greatest transformations that occurs in the Christian life is when believers move from merely believing that God loves people to deeply knowing that the Father loves them. When that revelation settles into the heart, fear loses its grip. Insecurity begins to fade; confidence grows; intimacy deepens. And the believer learns to rest in the Father’s affection.

INSTRUCTION: Today, spend time thanking God specifically for His personal love toward you. Do not merely think about His love for humanity; meditate on His love for you.

CONFESSION/PRAYER: Father, thank You for loving me personally and deeply. Help me to receive and believe the reality of Your affection toward me. May my heart rest securely in Your love and grow continually in intimacy with You. Amen.
