PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE (15)

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” – Romans 8:14

LIGHT FOR NOW: The divine nature is not self-governing; it is Spirit-governed. Every child of God has been given the Holy Spirit, not only to dwell within him but also to lead him.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of those who partake of the divine nature is that they are led by the Holy Spirit. The Christian life was never designed to be lived by mere human wisdom. God did not save us and then leave us to figure out life on our own. He gave us His Spirit to be our constant Guide. Paul writes: “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God”.
Notice that Paul does not say the sons of God are merely those who possess the Spirit. Every believer possesses the Holy Spirit. Rather, he emphasizes those who are led by the Spirit. The word “led” comes from the Greek word ago, meaning to guide, to direct, to bring along, or to conduct on a journey. It paints the picture of one who willingly follows the direction of another. This reminds us that the Holy Spirit is not merely present within us. He is actively leading us every day. He leads us through the Scriptures. He enlightens our understanding. He strengthens our conscience. He gives inward witness. He grants wisdom for daily decisions. He gently redirects us whenever we begin to wander. This is one of the privileges of possessing the divine nature.
Before salvation, the natural man was primarily governed by his senses, emotions, and sinful desires. But after the new birth, a new government begins within. The Holy Spirit now desires to govern the believer from the inside. This is why spiritual maturity is not measured by how loudly one speaks. Nor by how many years one has attended church. True maturity is revealed by increasing sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Notice also that Paul connects the Spirit’s leading with sonship. Why? It is because sons resemble their Father.
Just as earthly children gradually learn the ways of their parents, God’s children are taught by the Spirit to walk in the Father’s ways. The Holy Spirit never leads contrary to the written Word. He inspired the Scriptures, and He always leads in harmony with them. Therefore, every impression, desire, or decision must be tested by God’s Word. The Spirit and the Word never contradict each other. As believers continually fellowship with God through prayer and meditation on Scripture, they become more familiar with the Spirit’s leading. What once seemed difficult gradually becomes clearer. Their spiritual perception grows. Their confidence increases. Their obedience becomes more joyful. The Spirit’s leadership also protects us.
Many dangers are avoided because believers learn to follow His gentle promptings. Many opportunities are embraced because they learn to recognize His direction. What a glorious privilege! The Creator of the universe has not only placed His life within you but has also given you His Spirit to direct your steps. You are never expected to navigate life alone. The One who knows the end from the beginning walks with you every day. Therefore, cultivate a heart that is quick to listen, quick to obey, and quick to trust. For those who are led by the Spirit truly demonstrate the beauty of the divine nature at work within them. Hallelujah!

INSTRUCTION: Before making important decisions today, pause and pray. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts, and ensure that every decision agrees with the truth of God’s Word.

CONFESSION: Father, thank You for giving me Your Holy Spirit to lead and direct my life. I choose to be sensitive to His voice and obedient to His guidance. Help me to walk in step with Your Spirit today, that my life may reflect Your divine nature, in Jesus’ name, Amen. Glory!
