“Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh” – Galatians 5:16
LIGHT FOR NOW: Victory over the flesh is not produced merely by self-effort. It is the result of consistent fellowship with the Holy Spirit.
One of the greatest struggles believers face is the conflict between spiritual desires and fleshly tendencies. Even after salvation, believers sometimes notice old habits, temptations, wrong desires, and weaknesses attempting to pull them away from God. Paul addresses this reality clearly: “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh…” (Galatians 5:17). The word “flesh” here is from the Greek word sarx. Though it can sometimes refer to the physical body, in this context it speaks of the fallen human nature with its sinful tendencies and self-centered desires. The flesh constantly gravitates toward independence from God. But Paul gives the solution: “Walk in the Spirit…” The word “walk” comes from the Greek word peripateo, meaning to live continually, to conduct one’s life, or to move habitually in a direction. This means walking in the Spirit is not a one-time emotional experience. It is a daily lifestyle of fellowship and yieldedness to God.
Many believers try to overcome the flesh merely by willpower, resolutions, or external rules. But outward regulations alone cannot transform inward appetites permanently. This was one limitation of the Law under the Old Covenant. It could command righteousness externally, but it could not impart inward power. But under the New Covenant, the Holy Spirit now dwells within believers to empower transformation from the inside. Ezekiel prophesied this in Ezekiel 36:27: “And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes…” Notice God said He would cause transformation internally through His Spirit. Walking in the Spirit involves: Prayer, meditation on scripture, sensitivity to God’s voice, obedience to divine conviction and fellowship with God continually. The more believers feed the spirit, the weaker the influence of the flesh becomes.
Unfortunately, many believers starve their spirit while constantly feeding the flesh through ungodly influences, worldly distractions, negative environments, and unchecked desires. Whatever is fed grows stronger. This is why spiritual discipline matters deeply. Prayer strengthens spiritual sensitivity. The word renews the mind. Worship softens the heart. Fellowship with God increases spiritual awareness. Paul then says: “…and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh”. Notice he did not say believers would never face temptation. Rather, he reveals that walking in the Spirit weakens the control of fleshly desires. Victory over the flesh is not merely about suppressing desires externally. It is about developing stronger affection for God internally. A believer deeply conscious of God’s presence naturally becomes less attracted to sinful compromise. This is why intimacy with God is powerful.
The closer a believer walks with Christ, the more the character of Christ becomes visible through him. Galatians 5 later speaks about the fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. Notice it is called “fruit,” not “works.” Fruit grows naturally from healthy connection. Likewise, spiritual character grows through abiding in fellowship with God. Victory over the flesh is not achieved by striving harder alone, but by walking closer with the Spirit.
INSTRUCTION: Prioritize your spiritual life daily. Make time consistently for prayer, scripture meditation, and fellowship with God.
PRAYER: I walk in the Spirit daily. The Holy Spirit strengthens me to overcome the flesh, resist temptation, and live in righteousness. My desires align increasingly with God’s will, and my life reflects the character of Christ. Amen.
