“This then is the message which we have heard of him and declare unto you that god is light and in him is no darkness at all.” – 1John 1:5
LIGHT FOR NOW: In Christ, light is our being.
It has been established that “light” is a person and this person is Jesus Christ. Since it has been confirmed that Jesus is by nature light and by character light then it is pertinent to consider how Jesus has shine this light on earth. John 11:1-44 gives account of Lazarus’ dead, but the striking part in the story seen when Jesus goes to resurrect his friend Lazarus. This was a situation of hopelessness. Mary and Martha had lost hope but Jesus shone this light by resurrecting Lazarus from dead. God’s character of light is seen in the uplifting of men freeing men from captivity and giving hope to the hopeless as such wherever there is a trace of darkness, God is absent. God is indeed light as he shows this by reconciling the lost back to himself. By virtue of our fallen condition, we were in darkness and were alienated from the zoe of God; but in Jesus Christ we have been reconciled to God and we have the right standing with him, Glory! This means that having been reconciled to God we have fellowship with the light and the light dwells in us.
Believers can also experience and manifest God’s light because we have God’s life in us. “John 1:4 says that the life of God is in the Lord Jesus and this life is the light of men” At the point of salvation where we receive Christ, this life entered into us and becomes “our light of life”. Note that; this light is not an objective light which enlightens us from without but a subjective light that enlightens and enriches us from within. For the fact that Jesus lives in us, He has automatically become the light of life in us. Matthew 8:16 reads “when evening came, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed and He cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were ill”. The ability of Jesus to cast out demons with a word testifies of not just his sovereignty but also shinning of the light which He is. At the sight of the light (Jesus), demons (darkness) tremble. Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. God reassures us in this portion that all his plans and promises for us are good and no trace of evil or darkness attached to it. Believers should debunk the notion that any evil that comes to them is permitted by God to happen rather they should know that God will only step in to settle that pain or struggle so as to expel that darkness. Conclusively, James in James 1:17 says “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes from the father of lights with whom there is no variableness or shadow of turning”. As believers we ought to know that perfection cannot be given to us by the world rather Christ which is our father of light is the only giver of perfect gifts, hence, we should bank of his love towards us and also affirm daily that He is our light, we have the indwelling of this light and we dispense this light. Glory!
