“This then is the message which we have heard of him and declare unto you that god is light and in him is no darkness at all.” – 1John 1:5

LIGHT FOR NOW: Life without the light is incomplete

In our previous lesson we gave a definition of what light is and who light is that is to say, light means illumination and God is this light we are talking about. To delve deeper, John 8:12 says when Jesus spoke again to the people, he said “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. The statement “I am the light” has its root in Jesus’ relationship with the father. John Stephen Piper an American New Testament scholar states, “Jesus speaks from God and for God and as God”. We will have limited capacity and ability to understand ourselves outside Christ, hence proper knowledge and understanding of who we are in him and what we can do through him. Life can be beautiful on earth but without Christ it is incomplete, just as one sun lights the whole world; so does one Christ, as such we need no other as there won’t even be another Christ. Furthermore, darkness in John 8:12 is the Greek word “Skotia” and is defined as the darkness due o the want of light and is used to describe ignorance of divine things. Being ignorant or oblivious of the dark leaves us wanting and man will come to the end of himself in hopelessness if he traverses this earth without Christ.

Jesus extends his light to the man that was born blind in John 9:5-7. “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world when he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with clay and said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, he went his way therefore and washed and came back seeing”. Jesus’ healing hands being stretched into that ugly situation is regarding as him sending his light to expel the darkness that had blinded that man for years. It is important to note therefore that God is too good to glory in a man’s downfall or pains and as such he doesn’t use evil to punish any man. Light is akin to freedom so the entrance of light which is God into a man is automatically the entrance of freedom. Also, in Mark 5:26, the bible records that there was a woman who was subject to bleeding for twelve years but a mere touching of the hem of Jesus’ garment, she got instantly healed. This shows how mighty Jesus healing ministry is where just the hem of the garment radiated light to heal that woman’s body. Hence, believers should also come to the understanding that they can also transmit this light just as Christ did because at salvation we are reconciled with the father and everything which makes God, God is deposited on our inside. It is therefore, our responsibility as believers who have the indwelling of the light to radiate this light to others. Christ will not come back to preach the gospel to unbelievers for us; so it is in our place to take the message which we have heard and known to unbelievers who are yet to know what we know. It is of utmost importance to note that Christ being the light did not just hoard this light or keep it to himself rather he shone the light by healing the sick raising the dead, casting out demons an even reconciling us with the father, thus we also who have the indwelling of the spirit do these things and more. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: As believers shine your light to the unsaved by making the word of God your lifestyle.

CONFESSION: I declare that I am a carrier and a transmitter of the light of God.

QUOTE: In Christ, we have the absolute fullness of light.
