IN MY NAME

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:9)

LIGHT FOR NOW: The Name of Jesus implies an authority.

Yesterday, we ended our study by attempting an investigation into what the Name of Jesus implies. The preceding verse to our theme text says, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth” (Philippians 2:10). Paul here is teaching what Jesus earlier taught His disciples. “And these signs shall follow them that believe; IN MY NAME…”(Mark 16:17). The Name of Jesus implies an authority. It signifies an office. In my name implies in His accomplishing scriptures, fulfilling prophecies; in His resurrection, ascension and the indwelling of the Spirit. Name refers to a man’s office, inheritance, accomplishments and exploits. It’s like asking: What does he have? What can he do? What has he done? Many ignorantly say, “At the mention of His name”, No! That’s never seen anywhere in the Bible. Jesus acquired His name in three ways. Firstly, by birth, that is at His resurrection Psalm 2:7 says “I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

So when David said, “….this day have I begotten thee”, he was prophesying of His resurrection, not incarnation. By resurrection, He became the first born from the dead. Secondly, in His exploits or conquest Colossians 2:15 says, “And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it” and thirdly, as an honour (John 17:1-5). In John 14:13-14 where Jesus said, “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” He meant, “Whatever you ask in my resurrection, I will do”. Here He was referring to the giving of the Holy Spirit. So every time you say, “In the name of Jesus, you’re invariably saying, “HE ROSE FROM THE DEATH. And since He rose from the death, you can cast out demons; if any deadly thing enters your system, it won’t hurt you. You can heal the sick and raise the dead. The Bible says, “Oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength! All this energy issues from Christ: God raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power is exempted from his rule. And not just for the time being, but forever” (Ephesians 1:19-21 MSG). He gave us so much authority so we can influence and establish His righteousness in all the earth.
