“Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given us the earnest of the spirit” – 2 Corinthians 5:5

LIGHT FOR NOW: The same person going is the one that is coming.

If you are a good Bible student, you should have known by now that the giving of the spirit was actually the promise God made to Abraham in the Old Testament. The promise was the indwelling of the Spirit which wasn’t available as at that time. “That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentile through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith” (Galatians 3:14). “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit” (Joel 2:28-29). It was a promise yet to be fulfilled. That Spirit is also called “The spirit of His son” according to Galatians 4:6, “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father”.

Prior to the coming of the Spirit, Jesus emphatically taught His disciples of Him going to prepare a place for the believer, and then He will come again to receive the believer unto Himself, so that where Jesus is, the believer may be there also. “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also” (John 14:2-3). In the above verses, when He said, “I go to prepare a place for you”, He wasn’t actually referring to a departure, but an arrival of the promised Spirit. This is further explained in verse 16 where Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter that he may abide with you FOR EVER”. And the comforter was further explained as the Holy Spirit in verse 26 which speaks of the Spirit within, that is, the Spirit of the Father in the believer. It therefore implies that in John 14:2-3, Jesus is the one going and He’s the same person coming. “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you” (John 14:17-20).
