“Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given us the earnest of the spirit” – 2 Corinthians 5:5
LIGHT FOR NOW: The indwelling of the spirit is Sonship.
Prior to the coming of the Spirit, Jesus emphatically taught His disciples of Him going to prepare a place for the believer, and then He will come again to receive the believer unto Himself, so that where Jesus is, the believer may be there also. “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also” (John 14:2-3).In the above verses, when He said, “I go to prepare a place for you”, He wasn’t actually referring to a departure, but an arrival of the promised Spirit. This is further explained in verse 16 where Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter that he may abide with you FOR EVER”. And the comforter was further explained as the Holy Spirit in verse 26 which speaks of the Spirit within; that is, the Spirit of the Father in the believer. It therefore implies that in John 14:2-3, Jesus is the one going and He’s the same person coming. “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you” (John 14:17-20).
The facts speaks for itself; He said He will return in His spirit, and make abode in the believer, then the believer will become one with Christ and the Father. This will not happen at rapture but at His resurrection, at redemption, when a man hears and believes the Gospel. He also called the earnest of the Spirit, the Spirit of Christ in Romans 8:9: “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his”. The earnest of the Spirit is therefore the fulfilled promise of God to the born again. The indwelling of the Spirit is SONSHIP, “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his son into your hearts, Crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if sons, then an heir of God through Christ” (Galatians 4:6-7); and living in the consciousness of your sonship. His ever-abiding presence in you is the guarantee for a daily life of victory, triumph, excellence, dignity, honour and glory. The Spirit is the greater one that dwells in you FOREVER. “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
