“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” – Romans 8:9
LIGHT FOR NOW: The believer will only be effective to the degree which he has precise knowledge of who he is in Christ Jesus. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives is one of the greatest blessings we have as Christians. He is our advantage and the secret to a glorious and successful life. Thus, you must recognize and take advantage of His ministry in your life. Unfortunately, some believers ignore the ministry of the Holy Spirit; hence their lives are out of joints. But it’s the ministry of the Holy Spirit that guides and leads us in all affairs of life; He grants us the wisdom and counsel to win every day in life. So consciously acknowledging His presence with you and in you; yielding to Him always and never ignoring His counsel will make your life easy. In Apostle Paul’s writings to the churches are his prayers for the brethren to grow in knowledge. This implies that a believer will be effective to the degree that he has precise knowledge of the revelation of Christ (Philemon 1:4-6; Ephesians 1:17-23, Philippians 1:9-11; Colossians 1:9-11). An important concept of study for the believer in Christ will therefore be that he should be acquainted with the subject of the indwelling of the spirit. The indwelling of the Spirit was a promise made in the Old Testament books of the Bible: “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new Spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.” (Ezekiel 36:25-27). Also, when Jesus said,”….. I will build my church…” in Matthew 16:18, He was invariably referring to the indwelling of the Spirit; that is, the coming of the Spirit at His resurrection.
Hence, the believer ought to carefully pay attention to this important subject in Christianity, as a failure to do so may lead to the believer looking at the promise of the indwelling of the Spirit as a promise yet to be fulfilled. The prophecy in Ezekiel 36:25-27 where we earlier referenced has to do with the Spirit within, that is, the indwelling of the Spirit; and it relates to what has been fulfilled in us today. The use of the term “I will” in verse 25, points to the fact that it was a promise of God and what He would do by Himself. Verse 26 speaks of a new heart, which refers to a new Spirit He would put within us – this has been fulfilled already. Interestingly, it should be noted that what was mentioned in verse 25, 26 and 27 point to one and the same event. In other words, the cleansing is explained in the indwelling of the Spirit which is descriptive of the new birth.
