“And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth – Genesis 1:26-28.

LIGHT FOR NOW: The Adam of Genesis 1 is the plan of God for the Adam of Genesis 2.

We’ve established that the phrase “let us make” in verse 26 of Genesis 1 which is the Hebrew word “asah” speaks of a plan. Now, the words “in our image and after our likeness” refer to sonship or your origin. By saying “in our image and after our likeness” which refers to sonship, then external life is implied because you can’t be a son of God without the life of God or without being birthed by God. The word “man” still in verse 26 of Genesis 1 is “Adam” in Hebrew and it implies mankind or humanity (male and female). Don’t miss the fact that Adam as mankind already encapsulates male and female. In chapter 2, when Adam was formed as an individual (male) and later on Eve (female), the plan of God which is God’s Adam (God’s humanity, mankind in Genesis 1:26-28) was offered to Adam and Eve (mankind) as the tree of life in Genesis 2:16-17 for them to accept or reject. Adam and Eve is man but for the purpose of masculinity and feminity, we now have the male man (Adam) and the female man (Eve), why? For the purpose of procreation.

If you observe closely, we’ve said that the man in Genesis 1:26-28 and the man in Genesis 2:7 are not the same man. The man who is the image, likeness of God and in dominion or authority is the plan of God for the man who was made a living soul. So, we have two Adams:

  • Adam or mankind in Genesis 1
  • Adam or mankind in Genesis 2

And God’s plan for the Adam in Genesis 2 is the Adam in Genesis 1. So, let’s identify these two Adams and we will soon know who exactly the image of God is and know who occupies God’s authority.

INSTRUCTION: Be patient as the study progresses.
