“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten so, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world: but that through him the world might be saved” John 3:16-17.

LIGHT FOR NOW: The goodness or love of God for humanity is seen in salvation.

We saw in our studies previously that God’s involvement where sin and its wages were concerned is the offer of the gift of eternal life. For eternal life to be called a gift will mean it is not worked for, earned or deserved. Thus, eternal life is the gift of God’s grace. Eternal life is salvation and vice versa. In other words, salvation is not earned, worked for or deserved; it is purely the work of God’s grace. Paul echoes in Ephesians 2:8-9 which reads “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast”. Therefore, salvation is the gift of God’s grace. And how is this gift of God’s grace received? Paul answered by saying, “Through faith” (Ephesians 2:8). Thus, a man is saved; a man receives eternal life by faith in Christ. That is why John 3:16 above echoes, “that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life”. So faith/believe in Christ is what draws the line between the saved and the damned. Faith in Christ marks the dividing line between the condemned and the redeemed. Though salvation is available, salvation is not automatic upon all; a man will have to believe in the message of the gospel to be saved. What is this message?

Paul in his letter to the Corinthian church in his first epistle spells out this message, it reads, “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received how that Christ died for sins according to the scriptures, And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1Corinthians 15:3-4). Therefore, the message of His death, burial and resurrection is the message of salvation; it is faith in this fact that He died, He was buried and He rose from the dead that has the capacity to save a man. No wonder Paul said, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believed” (Romans 1:16). Therefore, the saving ability of God is the good news of the gospel, which reveals God’s goodness to humanity. It is in the fact that He died, was buried and He rose from the dead that we can say yes, Jesus loves man. Jesus therefore, is the gift of God’s love; He is the expression of God’s love. Jesus is the proof of God’s love and goodness for humanity; He is the light that shines out of darkness; He is life as a tree in Genesis, He is the seed of the woman, He is the spirit of God hovering upon the face of waters, He is the light in whom life is found. Hallelujah!
