“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light: and there was light” Genesis 1:1-3.
LIGHT FOR NOW:The bible opens up with the revelation of God’s plan for humanity.
We have seen the state of man in prophetic utterance of verse 2 of the above text; man in the state of darkness, man in the state of spiritual death, why? This is because man is tohoboho (that is, man is empty of the light). Notice again, the darkness is not from God, it’s not a creation of God, it’s not an act of God; rather, the darkness is the absence of the light of God. Also remember, life is in the light and death will be thus found in the darkness. So if the darkness is not a doing of God but rather the absence of God, the death will not be a doing of God but the absence of God. In other words, spiritual death is the absence of the life of God. In essence, Genesis 1:2 is a prophetic utterance of man in a state of spiritual death (this is even before the formation of man in Genesis 2 and man’s choice in Genesis 3). But coming with this utterance in verse 2 where man is in a state of spiritual death is the solution to the state of man in spiritual death. And what is this solution? The next statement is the solution “And the spirit of God moved… And God said light be…” One of the facts we’ve deduced from verse 3 is “father said son” and this is in view of salvation. And so we’ve said that the reason for Father and Son (and Holy Ghost inclusive) is for salvation. So the question is, we’ve seen Father and Son (in verse 3) but what about the Holy Ghost? The answer is right before us, this is it, “And the spirit of God moved…” That term “spirit of God” is the Hebrew word “Elohim ruach” and you know when the Holy Spirit/Spirit of God is mentioned, then resurrection is in the picture, why? This is because it is in the resurrection that we have the offer of God’s spirit or the indwelling of the spirit is in the resurrection. Why the indwelling of the spirit? This is because it is the proof of salvation. So the reason for Holy Spirit, Father and Son is salvation. Remember, “the face of the waters” refers to man; so the moving of God’s spirit upon the face of the waters was to figuratively communicate the offer of God’s spirit to man in the resurrection of Jesus. Hence, the next statement said, “God said light be” which is the indwelling of the spirit in the heart of the born again man and this equals salvation. So before us in Genesis 1:1-3 is the promise of: the resurrection, salvation, the indwelling of the spirit and the new creation. Hallelujah!
