“Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,” – Ephesians 1:15-19
LIGHT FOR NOW: Jesus is the word of God communicated in God’s written word.
As we proceeded in this subject, we came to see that the birth of the believer is of the incorruptible seed, which is the word of God that lives and abides forever. Now the question that came to the fore which when properly answered will clarify more questions we eluded in our previous studies is, what could the term “word of God” in this text be referring to? Observe 1Peter 1:23 again, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever”. So, when he said “word of God” here, was he referring to a book or a person? Now, let’s begin this analysis by reading in context first, now observe Peter’s words in previous verses to unbundle this fact, it reads, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God” (1Peter 1:18-21); his focus was on a person; the person of Christ; our redemption was by His precious blood which was without blemish or spot; He was the one foreordained before the foundation of the world; He was the one who was raised from the dead. So, when he now says, “by the word of God” in verse 23, he wouldn’t have been saying that the born again man was born by a book, but the born again man was born by a person and this person is the word of God. That’s why if you replace the phrase “the word of God” with the word “bible” here, you will discover that it sounds out of place; “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the bible, which liveth and abideth forever”. So, he wouldn’t have been referring to a book but a person. Hallelujah!
