“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said let there be light and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light day and the darkness he called night. And the evening and the morning were the first day” Genesis 1:1-5
LIGHT FOR THE NOW: The bible is God’s thought clothed in vocabulary.
A vital fact established in the course of this studies is that what is actually called God’s word is actually God’s word communicated using man’s words. The bible thus is God’s word or thoughts clothed in vocabulary (human’s words or human communication). Observe Paul’s words again in 2Timothy 3:15-16 which reads; “And that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scriptures is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”. Recall the phrase “given by the inspiration of God” is the “theopneustos” in the Greek language. The word “theo” is used for God as we saw in our previous study.
Now, the word “pneutos” is actually where we have the Greek word “pneo” which is a word used by Jesus in John 3:8 in his discussion with Nicodemus which reads: “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst tell whence it cometh, and wither it goeth: so is everyone that is born of the Spirit”. That word “bloweth” is the word “pneo” in the Greek and it means to blow (in other words, an action is implied or an activity is involved). Bringing this back to 2Timothy 3:15-16, it can in other words be stated that the writings (of the scriptures) had an activity of God. Therefore, we can deduce two important facts from the explanations so far:
• God inspired the documentation of the scriptures (the bible).
• However, God did not document or write the bible (or the scriptures).
The documentation or writing of the bible was done by men; however inspired by God. This in essence means, that the words to be used will be man’s words but in God’s inspiration. The bible is not a product of man’s inspiration, it is God’s inspiration prompting men in the documentation; it is not man’s wisdom, it is God’s wisdom communicated in man’s language; it is not a human book, it is God’s book however communicated in human’s words because the bible is or was not written for or to man, then it will be in the language of man. Therefore, an understanding of the kind of communication available in the written word is very vital where proper bible interpretation is concerned. Hallelujah!!!
