“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said let there be light and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light day and the darkness he called night. And the evening and the morning were the first day” Genesis 1:1-5
LIGHT FOR THE NOW: What we call God’s word is God’s thoughts communicated in man’s words.
It is deduced from our previous studies on this subject that the bible is actually God’s words written in man’s words. Now, let’s ascertain further clarity on this fact as we backtrack to Paul’s words to Timothy who was a fellow minister of the gospel. 2Timothy 3:15-16 “And that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scriptures is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”.
Now, having examined the word “known” and the term “Holy Scriptures” (verse 15) in our previous study, observe Paul’s words in verse 16. Paul in verse 16 brings in the quality of it (the Holy Scriptures) being inspired of God. The phrase “given by the inspiration of God” was translated from the Greek word “theopneustos”. The word “theopneustos” is a combination of two words:
• The word “theo”, which is a word used for God.
• And the word “pneutos” which means to inspire something or to breathe into something. It is a word used for prompting an action, which is to prompt an action or to make another do something.
In other words, God inspired the act of writing the scriptures and not that he wrote the scriptures; that is, God inspired the writing, He did not document the writing. Meaning God inspired the documentation, but he wasn’t the one who did the documentation. Men did the documentation of the scriptures; this therefore buttresses the fact that the scriptures was documented by men and therefore must be interpreted with an understanding of men’s language/human language. In other words, the scriptures must be interpreted as a piece of literature because men did the documentation and men thus will observe rules of regular grammar such as grammatical construction of words, tenses, figures of speech, etc. the reason we had to go through all these details will soon unfold in subsequent studies as we will soon delve into the subject of discourse. Hallelujah!!!
INSTRUCTION: The knowledge of God’s word is vital, go for it.
PRAYER: Father, I declare that the eyes of my understanding are enlightened like never before in Jesus Name, Amen.
QUOTE: The Bible is God’s book communicated in human language revealing God’s thoughts to humanity with human’s words.
