“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; wherein in time past ye walked according to the counsel of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. Among whom also we all had our conversation in time past in the lust of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of our flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others” – Ephesians 2:1-3
LIGHT FOR NOW: The believer was raised from death to life.
It was seen in our previous studies that at the point of our identification with Jesus, we were raised from spiritual death to spiritual life the same way Jesus was raised from spiritual death to spiritual life in the resurrection. Now, notice the tenses used in each verses in the above text: ‘you had he quickened, who were dead’ (Verse 1); ‘in times past ye walked according’ (verse 2); ‘also we all had our conversation in time past…were by nature… ‘(Verse 3).
Now, observe, in the above three verses of the above text, Paul uses past tense terminologies in describing the states of the saved when he was unsaved. Notice something in verse 1; ‘who were dead’. Now, in verse 1, he says we were dead, but afterwards said in verse 2 ‘we walked’. And that word, ‘walked’ in verse 2 means to regulate one’s life. In essence, the dead being implied in verse 1 was spiritual death and that is why in verse 2 we walked even though we were dead. In other words, Paul in describing our spiritual state before we were identified with Christ calls us dead (spiritually dead), but however at the point of our identification with Christ, we were quickened.
The word, ‘quickened’ means to make alive. Thus, at the point of salvation, a spiritual dead man is quickened or made alive. In other words, a spiritual dead man is raised from spiritual death into spiritual life.
This spiritual life received by this man at the point of identification is called eternal life. Meaning, the man that is saved is no more in a state of spiritual death but has been raised from spiritual death into spiritual life because of the eternal life at work in him which he received at the point of salvation. The man that has received this life (eternal life) can never perish. Jesus’ words in John 10:28 attests to this fact; it reads, “And I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand”. That eternal life at work in us is a proof that we have been quickened. Hallelujah!!!
INSTRUCTION: You have been raised from death to life. Live out the resurrection life at work in you.
PRAYER: Thank you Lord for the eternal life at work in me which has quickened me by raising me from spiritual death to spiritual life, in Jesus name. Amen
QUOTE: The man that has identified with Christ has the resurrected life of Christ.
