“For he had made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” – 2Corinthians 5:21.
LIGHT FOR NOW: You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.
Righteousness is a subject and concept that ought to be understood and comprehended by us (believers) as our reality in Christ. At the point of salvation, the saved who confessed Jesus as his Lord and Savior was made righteous. Paul in our opening text lets us see that Jesus was made sin for us. He was not a sinner; he received all our sins on the cross and whosoever believes in his redemptive sacrifice is saved; meaning a person is made righteous at the point where he believes in Christ.
Jesus became our substitute in his redemptive sacrifice and anyone who believes in Christ for salvation is made righteous in Christ. Paul said, “…that we might be made the righteousness of God in him”. That is why a man cannot be righteous outside Christ. Righteousness is Jesus’ work and not man’s work. How then is a man righteous? A man is only righteous by faith in Christ; outside faith in Christ, a man cannot be righteous.
Apostle Paul in the book of Romans brings more clarity on this subject. In Romans 5:17, he said “For if by one man’s offence, death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ”; righteousness is a gift. What is a gift? A gift is something you don’t work for. Man did not work for righteousness and man will never work for righteousness; righteousness is what God has made available in Christ and its freely given to everyone at the point he believes in Christ. Your arrival in Christ is what makes you righteous; you are righteous by faith in what Jesus did. Therefore, we can say that righteousness is part of the realities of the believer in Christ encapsulated in salvation.
INSTRUCTION: Know who you are.
PRAYER: I declare that I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus; I see myself the same way Christ sees me, he sees me righteous and I see myself righteous, in Jesus name, Amen.
QUOTE: Righteousness is the accomplishment of Christ and not the accomplishment of man.
