PREDESTINATION: THE LOVE OF GOD TOWARDS MAN (PART 2)

“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his son, that he might be the first born among many brethren” –Romans 8:29

LIGHT FOR NOW: The Love of God is the foreknowledge of God in action.

There is a misinterpretation of the word, ‘predestination’ due to translations from unbiblical sources; misconceptions which may arise from a lack of scriptural knowledge. To some people, the theory of predestination means that everything has already been planned and arranged by God and so man has no control over it. It is important to note that from accurate historical sources, the word, ‘predestination’ has never appeared in any writing or teaching for over three hundred years after the church. To really understand the concept of predestination, one must not rely on people’s opinions or experiences but allow the Bible to speak for itself. In our text for today, the word, ‘foreknow’ is gotten from the Greek word, ‘proginosko’ which means to know beforehand. There is also ‘proginosis’ which deals with specific facts unlike ‘proginosko’ which deals with general knowledge. God had a marked out plan for salvation beforehand. The killing of Jesus never took God unawares. Nothing takes God unawares. God mapped out the plan for the death of Christ. God gave out Jesus to be killed.

The foreknowledge or determinate counsel of God was not God influencing the killing of Jesus by men but God’s motive or plan was that Christ should die. God’s foreknowledge was not to influence man’s action but seen in his motive and wisdom; determining his action ahead of time. The Love of God is the foreknowledge of God in action. God acted or demonstrated his love in the giving of His Son to die instead of man. John chapter 3 verse 16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life”. The death of Christ is the love of God towards man. It is the love of God dispensed to man. The believer in Christ does not have a love problem. God played out His love all by Himself. The giving out of Jesus by God to be killed by men is the demonstration of the love of God towards man.
