“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill” – Matthew 5:17
LIGHT FOR NOW: No man is justified in the Law.
Until Christ came, no man was able to keep all that was written in the law. As a matter of truth, the law was given to expose the weakness of man. Romans chapter 3 verses 19 and 20 say, “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin”. We can see from our text for today that Christ came to fulfill the law for man because man did not have the wherewithal to keep the law. Jesus Christ stated clearly that He did not come to destroy the law but to fulfill it. This is because the law had to be kept to the letter. The law was a schoolmaster. There was no mercy in the Law. The Law was full of curses. But thanks be the Jesus who did not only fulfill the law but ended it for man’s sake. Apostle Paul speaking in Romans chapter 10 verse 4 says, “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth”. This means once you believe in Christ, you are free from the law and cannot come into condemnation. This is because the law was not in the original plan of God and therefore cannot annul the grace of God for man.
Moses introduced the law because of the hardness of man’s heart and their rebellious attitude. In John chapter 1 verse 17, the Bible records, “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ”. So, Jesus Christ is the Grace of God dispensed to man. He has brought us redemption from the curses of the law. Galatians chapter 3 verses 13 and 14 say, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree: that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith”. So, by the death of Christ on the cross, we are free from the curse of the law. Christ nailed the law and all its ordinances to the cross. Therefore, as believers in Christ, we are to “stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage”.
INSTRUCTION: Appreciate the grace of God given through Christ.
Prayer: Lord, I thank you for redeeming me from the curse of the law, in Jesus Name!
