“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his son, that he might be the first born among many brethren” –Romans 8:29
LIGHT FOR NOW: The predeterminate counsel of God is His wisdom and foreknowledge.
The misinterpretation of the word, ‘predestination’ always comes from unbiblical sources. Many people believe that predestinate means that God had already designed everything and there is nothing man can do about it. But when talking about predestination, there is need to allow the scripture speak for itself. From our text for today, the word, ‘foreknow’ is from the Greek word, ‘proginousko’ with ‘pro’ meaning ‘before’ and ‘ginousko’ meaning ‘ to know’. This word has been used many times in the scriptures to describe God. Romans chapter 11 verse 2 says, “God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew”. Also, 1 Peter 1 verse 20 says, “who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you”. The same word can also be used for man. Acts 26 verse 5 says, “which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee”. Besides, 2 Peter chapter 3 verse 17 says, “ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness”. The summary of these is foreknowledge. The word, ‘foreknowledge’ is from the Greek word, ‘prognosis’ which means to know beforehand and it has to do with a specific knowledge not general knowledge.
Acts chapter 2 verse 23 says, “Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain” the determinate counsel of God is his wisdom and foreknowledge. By foreknowledge, God delivered up Jesus to wicked men. It was the determinate counsel of God that Jesus be killed. God had a motive in delivering Jesus up to be killed by men. God’s foreknowledge was not to influence man’s action. It was seen in His wisdom. God’s intention is known in His actions. God does not just talk about love. He acts it. The demonstration of the Love of God towards man can be seen in His action of delivering up Jesus to be killed.
