JESUS: THE HIGH PRIEST OF BELIEVERS

“Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” Hebrews 4:14-15

LIGHT FOR NOW: Jesus is our High Priest, our Mediator and our Advocate.

One of the vital aspects of the earthly governance is the legal system. The expertise of the lawyer can go a long way in the determination of a case. This is also applicable in the heavenly system. A priest is someone who stands between God and man; he is an Advocate or a Mediator. This is analogous to a Lawyer who serves as an Advocate to a State, a people or an individual in the court of law. Believers have a High Priest who is their Advocate or Mediator in the person of Jesus Christ and God is the Righteous Judge of all. There is also the devil who is the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10). The believers in Christ are the defenders. The devil accuses believers day and night without ceasing. Therefore, as defendants, believers need a great High Priest. Recall that in the Old Testament, the Israelites used to have a high priest who a Mediator between God and them.

The high priest needed to be cleansed before He could intercede for the children of Israel. But in the New Testament, Christ Jesus is already Holy and Perfect in all His ways. He is not in need of any cleansing before He can stand before God on our behalf. Jesus is not trying to communicate with God on our behalf, but He is already seated on the right hand of God on our behalf.Jesus is not offering the blood of animals; He offered Himself. Hebrews 9:12 says, “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us”. The blood of Jesus is the most powerful thing that can happen to believers. It is the substance of our redemption. 1 Peter 1 verses 18 and 19 read, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot”. The blood of Jesus is the difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament needed the blood of bulls and other animals; in the New Testament, Jesus presented Himself. By the sacrifice of Jesus, He has become our High Priest, our Mediator and our Advocate, constantly speaking on our behalf.

INSTRUCTION: Engage the High Priestly office of Christ.

PRAYER: Lord, I thank you for constantly speaking on my behalf, in Jesus Name. Amen.

QUOTE: The blood of Jesus is the substance of our redemption.
