“But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father is in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike” Matthew 5:44-45(NLT)
LIGHT FOR NOW:
Giving is not part of the finished work of Christ.
Jesus finished work did not finish everything. Rather, there is an ongoing work of Christ that believers in Christ are designed to finish. The gospel is not only who you are in Christ, but it also includes your responsibility for being in Christ. If you are not excited about your responsibility in Christ, then you do not even know who you are in Christ. For instance, giving is not part of the finished work of Christ. Jesus and the Apostles spoke specifically to us that we should not think the way the world do. From our anchor scripture, the word “acting as true children of your father” means to be responsible as our Father. In this context, Jesus was describing the character of God in the place of giving. The word “evil” is from the Greek word “poneros” which means wicked or bad and that describes a person, actions or words. The word “good” is from the Greek word “agathos” which means pleasant, upright, and honorable. The just means someone that is innocent, while the unjust means someone who is guilty. God’s giving character is independent of the receiver or beneficiary. Luke 6:32-35 says “For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.” The word “unthankful” is from the Greek word “acharistos” which means to be ungrateful and not appreciative of favour. Even when you are unthankful, it does not prevent God’s character in the place of giving. Giving is God’s nature, lifestyle and character. There is nothing selfish about God in the place of giving. God does not give based on the actions or inactions of the beneficiary. In this subject, Jesus spoke of God’s giving character and He wants us to be exactly like Him. Hallelujah!
