SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT (10)

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me…” – Acts 1:8

LIGHT FOR NOW: The Holy Spirit does not merely mark us as God’s own; His presence empowers us for witness. The Spirit-filled believer is equipped to make Christ known through both words and life.

Jesus told His disciples, “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you”. The Greek word dynamis, translated “power,” refers to ability, strength, or capacity. It describes divine enablement for the assignment Christ gave His disciples. Notice what the power was for: “Ye shall be witnesses unto me”. The Spirit’s power is therefore connected to Christ’s mission. Jesus did not tell the disciples to manufacture courage through human strength. He told them to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit. They would receive divine enablement to testify about Him.
This is important because the Christian life is not designed to be lived entirely from natural ability. We need the Spirit’s help to speak, serve, love, endure, and represent Christ faithfully. A witness does not merely possess information. A witness testifies to what he knows. The Holy Spirit therefore empowers the believer to make Christ known. This can happen publicly through preaching and teaching, but it also happens through ordinary life. Your integrity can witness. Your love can witness. Your forgiveness can witness. Your courage in difficulty can witness. Your words about Christ can witness.
The Spirit does not empower us to draw attention to ourselves; He enables us to testify “unto” Christ. This keeps the focus where it belongs. The purpose of spiritual empowerment is not self-glorification. It is Christ-exaltation. And notice the geographical progression Jesus gave: Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. The witness was meant to move outward. The Spirit therefore turns inward spiritual experience into outward Christ-centred mission. Being sealed with the Spirit is not merely about having a private spiritual identity. The Spirit who lives in us also equips us to represent the One we belong to. So ask yourself today: “How can the life of Christ in me become a witness to someone else?”. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Depend on the Holy Spirit today as you interact with people. Ask Him to help you represent Christ through your words, character, love, courage, and actions.

CONFESSION: The Holy Spirit dwells in me and empowers me to represent Christ. I am a witness of Jesus. My words, conduct, love, and service point people toward Christ. I depend on the Spirit rather than my natural strength, in Jesus Name.  Amen.
