SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT (9)

“This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel…” – Acts 2:16

LIGHT FOR NOW: The Holy Spirit is not a New Testament afterthought. His coming was anticipated in Scripture, promised by God, and fulfilled through Christ. The Spirit’s indwelling is part of God’s redemptive plan revealed across the Scriptures.

Peter stood before the multitude on the day of Pentecost and explained what they were witnessing. People heard the disciples speaking in other tongues, and some wondered what it meant. Peter answered by pointing them to Scripture: “This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel”. Notice Peter’s hermeneutic. He did not treat the manifestation of the Spirit as an isolated spiritual phenomenon. He interpreted what was happening through the Scriptures.
The coming of the Spirit had been promised. Joel had spoken of a day when God would pour out His Spirit upon people. Jesus Himself had also promised the coming of the Spirit. In John 14:16, He told His disciples that the Father would give them “another Comforter.” The Greek word parakletos refers to one called alongside to help, encourage, counsel, and advocate. The Spirit’s coming therefore was not accidental. It was part of God’s covenant purpose.
At Pentecost, what had been promised began to be manifested in a remarkable way. Peter later connected the promise directly to his hearers: “For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off” – Acts 2:39. The Holy Spirit is therefore not merely for a select class of Christians. God’s promise reaches beyond the original gathering. It reaches generations. It reaches those who are “afar off”.

This means the believer should never think of the Holy Spirit as a strange addition to Christianity. The Spirit belongs to the very story of redemption. The Father promised Him. The Son promised Him. The Spirit was poured out. And believers received Him. Therefore, being sealed with the Holy Spirit means participating in something God planned long before our individual experience of salvation. You are standing inside a divine promise that runs through Scripture. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Read the promises concerning the Holy Spirit with expectation and gratitude. Do not separate the Spirit from Scripture; allow the Word to shape your understanding and experience of His ministry.

CONFESSION: I’ve received the Holy Spirit as the fulfillment of God’s promise in Christ. I honour His presence, submit to His leading, and remain rooted in the Scriptures that reveal His person and work, in Jesus Name.  Amen.
