SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT (4)

“Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts” – 2Corinthians 1:22

LIGHT FOR NOW: God did not merely give us His Spirit as an experience; He gave us the Spirit as His seal and as the guarantee of what is to come. The Holy Spirit is God’s present evidence of our future inheritance.

Paul says that God “sealed us”. Again, Scripture brings us back to the language of a seal. A seal identifies ownership, authenticates something, and can mark something as belonging to a particular person. In Christ, God has placed His mark upon us through the Holy Spirit. But Paul adds another beautiful truth: “And given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts”. The Greek word arrhabon, translated “earnest,” refers to a pledge, deposit, or first installment that guarantees the completion of a transaction.

Paul uses this language to explain something about our salvation. The Holy Spirit is not the entirety of what God has promised us. He is the present foretaste and guarantee of the fullness that is still to come. We have received something now that points toward something greater. This means the Christian life carries an eschatological dimension. We are living in the already, while awaiting the fullness of the not yet. We already have the Spirit. We already belong to Christ. We already experience fellowship with God. But we are still awaiting the consummation of redemption and the fullness of our inheritance.
The Holy Spirit therefore connects our present experience with our future hope. When you feel as though everything God has promised is still far away, remember this: God has already placed the pledge within you. His Spirit is not merely pointing you backward to what Christ accomplished. He is also pointing you forward to what God will ultimately complete. This gives the believer hope. Our future is not based on wishful thinking. God’s present work in us is connected to His promised future.
The Spirit within us is therefore a divine reminder: What God has begun; He intends to bring to completion. So treasure the presence of the Holy Spirit. Do not treat His indwelling as ordinary. You carry within you the present pledge of a promised inheritance. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: When you become discouraged about your spiritual journey or future, remember the Holy Spirit’s presence. Let His indwelling strengthen your confidence in God’s promises and produce patient hope.

CONFESSION: I have been sealed by God and given the Holy Spirit as the earnest of my inheritance. I live with confidence in God’s promises. I have the Spirit now, and I look forward with hope to the fullness of all God has prepared in Christ, in Jesus Name.  Amen.
