OUR UNION WITH CHRIST (6)

“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God” – Colossians 3:3

LIGHT FOR NOW: Union with Christ gives the believer a new source and a new security. Your true life is no longer defined merely by what is visible around you; it is hidden with Christ in God.

Paul makes a remarkable statement in Colossians 3:3: “Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God”. At first, this sounds like a contradiction. How can someone be dead and still have a life? Paul is speaking about the believer’s old life and new life. The old life under the dominion of sin has been judged in Christ, while the believer now possesses a new life that is connected to Christ. Notice the expression: “your life is hid with Christ in God”. The Greek word translated “hid” is krypto, meaning “to conceal, keep secret, or hide.” Paul is revealing that the deepest reality of the believer’s life is not always visible to the natural eye.
People may see your body, your circumstances, your occupation, your struggles, and your daily activities. But there is a deeper reality: your life is with Christ. This means your identity cannot be completely explained by your circumstances. You may have a difficult season, but difficulty does not become your identity. You may experience failure, but failure does not become your identity. You may face uncertainty, but uncertainty does not determine the foundation of your life. Your life is hidden with Christ in God. This is also why the enemy constantly tries to make believers identify with what they see rather than with what God has said. But faith learns to look beyond the visible.
Paul says in 2Corinthians 4:18, “We look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen”. The unseen does not mean unreal. The spiritual realities of our union with Christ are more fundamental than temporary circumstances. Verse 4 continues: “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory”. Notice those words: “Christ, who is our life”. Christ is not merely an addition to the believer’s life. He is the source and centre of it. This changes how we understand Christian identity. You are not first a person trying to make Christ fit into your life. You are a person whose life has been brought into Christ. Your plans, ambitions, relationships, abilities, and future must increasingly be understood from this union.
When Christ becomes the centre, life receives a new direction. This is why the believer can have peace even when circumstances are uncertain. His life is secured in a reality greater than what he can presently see. The world may change, circumstances may change, feelings may change, but Christ does not change. And because your life is hidden with Him in God, your deepest security is not found in circumstances but in Christ. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Do not allow temporary circumstances to define your identity today. Remind yourself throughout the day: “My life is hidden with Christ in God”.

CONFESSION: My life is hidden with Christ in God. I refuse to define myself by temporary circumstances. Christ is my life, my security, and my identity. I live from the reality of my union with Him, in Jesus Name. Amen!
